Qld: Army to build houses on Palm Island

TOWNSVILLE, April 12 AAP - The army will build new houses and services at the Aboriginalcommunity of Palm Island, the federal government said today.

Soldiers from engineer and construction regiments will move to the island for six monthsnext year under the ATSIC Army Community Assistance Project (AACAP).

The decision was announced today by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission,Defence Minister Robert Hill and Indigenous Affairs Minister Philip Ruddock.

ATSIC north Queensland commissioner Jenny Pryor said the decision followed consultationswith the community on Palm Island, off Townsville.

"This project is expected to involve about 200 army personnel from Brisbane, Sydneyand Townsville army bases and approximately 50 contractors," she said.

The project would cost about $7 million, the government said.
