Immunomodulating Effects of Surgery Studied.

Factors such as extension of trauma, age, type of anesthesia, and type of intensive care intervention were not directly related to specific immunomodulating effects of surgical intervention in head and neck tumors in a recent study.

Thirty-three patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx were included in the prospective study by A. Dietz and colleagues of the University of Heidelberg in Germany, which analyzed the immunomodulating effects of primary surgical intervention in tumors of the head and neck.
