Ath: Spectator attacks Brazilian marathon leader
ATHENS, Aug 29 AFP - The leader of the Olympic Games men's marathon, Vanderlei de Lima
of Brazil, was pushed into the roadside crowd by a spectator who ran across the route
in a bizarre incident today.
The incident happened six kilometres from the finish. De Lima recovered and returned
to take up the lead with two runners closing on him.
The man, apparently wearing traditional Greek dress, ran across the road and pushed
a shocked De Lima into the spectators lining the road.
Spectators rushed to pull the man off De Lima and he began running again.
Within five minutes he had been caught and passed by Stefano Baldini of Italy and had
slipped back into third place.
